TERRY HAYDAY
It is with great sadness that Insurance Museum learned of the death on 4th June 2026 of Terry Hayday, a great friend and supporter of I M. Terry was best known to IM Chairman, Reg Brown, whose comments are as follows.
I first met Terry in the early 1980s, when we were both underwriting for our own syndicates at Lloyd’s. I knew him best, however, as a fellow member of the Insurance Institute of London, as we shared the same passion for insurance education.
One of Terry’s great achievements was as Editor-in-Chief of the booklet celebrating the centenary of the Insurance Institute of London in 2007. He organised a group of Institute members to write a chapter each on the 100 years. I was privileged to write one of the chapters and was delighted that some of my postcard images were included in the final document.
In 2018, when I was asked to form a small committee of CII members to advise on what the Institute should do with its heritage items following the sale of Aldermanbury, I immediately thought that local institutes should be involved. Stephen and Veronica Wilkinson of the York Institute were already involved, having registered their interest with CII from the very beginning. So, I asked Allison Potts, Secretary of the largest local institute – the Insurance Institute of London, to nominate a representative. She nominated Terry, and I was delighted. Terry, however, was not so delighted but agreed to join the “small committee”. He served on that committee until we formed a charity. He made it clear that he had done a lot of charity work already and had no desire to be a trustee. Nevertheless, he continued to be a trusted advisor and proofreader – correcting many of our typographical errors.
We were greatly saddened when Terry told us of his cancer diagnosis a year or so ago and his desire to step back from IM.
Goodbye, my friend. Thank you for all your help and support. You will be sorely missed.

RON LONG
We are also sad to report the passing of Ron Long, fireman and fire-history enthusiast, who was an invaluable source of knowledge and information for IM, while we were collating the online fire galleries.
We are immensely grateful for the time Ron gave us, in sharing his extensive knowledge, over the course of many entertaining calls. Ron also gave us access to photographs from his extensive collection of fire fighting memorabilia, dating back to the time of the early fire insurance offices brigades. Among his collection included British fire marks, arm badges and firemen’s uniforms.
As well as being a retired fire-fighter and historian, Ron was known as a champion stone-skmmer, affectionately known as “the old tosser”. His stone-skimming career was born directly out of a devastating line-of-duty injury in 1992 when a roof collapsed directly on to him, while fighting a hotel fire. Faced with intensive physical therapy to build his upper body strength, he turned to stone skimming to help build muscles, without excessive head and neck movement.
Unfortunately because of family illness we were never able to meet Ron in person but our thoughts are with his family at this time.
