Hand in Hand

Hand in Hand fire bucket

An 18th century hand-stitched leather fire bucket made for the Hand in Hand Fire Office, which was formed in 1696. The buckets were made to order by artisan leather workers and distributed to their most important policy holders. The clasped hands of friendship, the emblem of the Hand in Hand, was hand-painted on to the bucket as a means of identification and as a pleasant form of advertising.
