West of England

West of England Fire and Life Insurance Company – Fire Bucket

A late 19th century part hand-stitched, part riveted leather fire bucket made for the West of England Fire & Life Insurance Company. The emblem of the company is hand-painted on the bucket and shows the figure of King Alfred, holding a spear and a sword, with a shield bearing the image of a dragon. The copper band is both attractive and also strengthens the rim of the bucket. To make them watertight, all leather fire buckets were lined with pitch.
