At the beginning of October, the Insurance Museum ran a fundraising event, which was kindly hosted by the ABI. We invited our existing supporters and Insurance Museum Members, to say thank you, as well as potential supporters to get them on board with the IM vision.
The keynote speaker, Bronek Masojada, City of London Sherriff 2023-24, highlighted the need for diversifying the workforce to recruit young people. This basic succession planning for the sector starts early, and Howard Benge, Insurance Museum director highlighted how museums connect with primary, secondary schools and colleges. Delivering an education and careers programme that introduces students and young people to insurance, will enable them to think about their future personal financial planning, being insurance consumers and potential careers.
Our call to arms, was not just about donations, but asking our supporters to look out for potential company sponsorship, funds and foundations that the IM could connect with. Fundraising is key to achieve the IM’s goals of developing programmes for schools, public engagement and insurance CPD.
We had a lot of positive feedback and have increased membership and donations. We are working now to connect with companies to increase corporate sponsorship. We would like to thank Bronek Masojada for sharing his words of support for our wonderful initiative, and the Association of British Insurers for kindly hosting our event for the evening.
CPD Events
Our programme of CPD lectures, webinars and tours continues with tours being booked throughout the autumn. We have given tours to the Insurance Institutes of Southampton, Bournemouth, the Belk College of Business at University of North Carolina Charlotte. We have also delivered webinars for the MGAA Next Gen programme.
All the tours and webinars cover the history of insurance, relating to the world of insurance today. One pertinent question came from the MGAA’s Next Gen audience, on how insurance history relates to today and working in insurance.
The profession has always been continuously changing, adapting to external and internal factors. The Fires of San Fransisco following the earthquake in 1906 brought about significant trust of Lloyd’s in the American market. The Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 brought about restructuring at Lloyd’s. An understanding of fire insurance and the penny policies of life assurance gives a great understanding of how insurance has supported society and allowed individuals to work and thrive. Even today, events such as the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore may well inform how future insurance is performed. The webinars and tours look at insurance history with a view on today.
If you are interested in booking a webinar or tour, then please contact Howard Benge, Director of the Insurance Museum, director@insurancemuseum.uk
